Penguins visit Mother Mary shrine picture

National Geographic's July edition included a surprise report of observed worship behaviour amongst a group of Antarctica penguins. The find, reported by Neils Godalm, leader of the 2019 Hurtigruten expedition, was of a group of twelve Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua), who seemed to keep themselves apart from the main penguin population, and migrated daily to Wayside shrine of the Virgin Mary where they stood swaying silently in a semi-circle.

"It was remarkable," said Mr Godalm. "At first we laughed because it looked like they perhaps thought the Holy Mother was just a trapped penguin, but it soon became clear that the shrine had special religious meaning for them."

The Catholic Church has refused to comment on the find, or rumours of a "special" relationship with the penguin species.
